William Brown, Artistic Director
WILLIAM
BROWN joined ORIANA Women’s Choir as Artistic Director in 1996.
Under his direction the choir has continued to grow and develop in
musical excellence.
William holds an honours music degree from
the
University of Western Ontario where he sang in, and was manager of, the
internationally known Faculty of Music Singers. For ten years he served
as Artistic Director of the Woodstock Fanshawe Singers. In that time
the choir won first prize in the CBC Choral Competition for Amateur
Choirs.
William’s awards include first prize in the
Leslie Bell Conducting Competition and the Barry Gosse Music Award. In
addition to being selected to participate in numerous national
conducting symposia, William served as guest conductor for the New
Brunswick Choral Federation Spring Choral Fest 2005. Recently, William
was listed in the first issue of Who is Who in Choral Music,
the international encyclopedia of choral conductors, composers, and
organizers.
William served as Adjudicator for the 2008
National
Music Festival Choral Finals, and the choral division of the Edmonton
Kiwanis Music Festival in April, 2009.
William has written several well-received
compositions for ORIANA, including Quant j'ai ouy le tabourin,
which won “Best Performance of a Canadian Work” in the 2004
CBC National Choral Competition. Some of William’s works are
published by earthsongs Publishing, and are included on ORIANA’s
CDs.
William is a Past President of the
Association of
Canadian Choral Conductors (ACCC) and Choirs Ontario. He teaches music
at Lawrence Park Collegiate for the Toronto District School Board, and
is active as a clinician, adjudicator, and composer.

Gergely Szokolay, Pianist
Hungarian born pianist Gergely
Szokolay performed both as a soloist and chamber
musician in Europe, North America and Japan while specializing in
teaching and accompanying. He has held the position of faculty
accompanist at the Banff Centre's Advanced Music Program, McGill
University's Opera Studio and the Glenn Gould School of the Royal
Conservatory of Music. Since 2005 he has been a pianist for the
Canadian Children's Opera Chorus.
Mr. Szokolay has been invited
to summer festivals such as the Domaine Forget, Orford Festival,
Ravinia Festival, The Festival of the Sound and the Bartok festival in
Hungary. Since 2006, Gergely has been a regular collaborative
pianist for the cello masterclasses at the Toronto Summer Music
Festival, working with Janos Starker, Denis Brott, Paul Katz, Roman
Borys, Shauna Rolston and Anthony Elliott. In 2007 he appeared as
a soloist at the Great Romantics Festival in Hamilton Ontario.
Equally
at home in the vocal and intrumental repertoire, Mr. Szokolay is highly
in demand as a vocal coach, piano instructor and collaborative pianist.

John Ford, Conductor Emeritus
John Ford conducted The ORIANA Singers for
19 years
during which time he not only brought the choir to new levels of
excellence but had a profound impact on the personal lives of many of
its members. John Ford died January 1, 2002 at the age of 68. His
loving and caring nature made him a friend and mentor to all who knew
him and he is sorely missed.
